FTTP Broadband coming to Arundel

Good news Arundel! 

Openreach said in May 2021 that it would speed up the delivery of full fibre to an extra five million UK homes. By 2026, the goal is to have 25 million homes connected. 

This is just another indicator that full fibre will overtake copper as the de facto connection method in the coming decade. 

But for Arundel residents and businesses, FTTP will be in place this year, sooner than we expected.

In fact, you may have already seen Openreach engineers working in Arundel over the last few weeks getting things set up ready to go.

So what exactly is FTTP?

FTTP (fibre to the property) is a full fibre connection that sends broadband signals all the way from the residence to the nearest exchange through a fibre optic cable.

Full fibre offers much higher performance than ADSL (all copper) or Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC – which still uses a copper connection from the street cabinet to the home), and will eventually replace telephone wires for transmitting voice conversations via the internet.

Full fibre, or FTTP (fibre to the property), is being rolled out across the country to provide super-fast internet and in recent weeks Openreach have announced FTTP is coming to Arundel.

FTTP will lay the groundwork for us to work more effectively from home, connect all of our smart home gadgets, get the most from streaming services like Netflix, enhance our gaming experience, or just connect even the largest of households smoothly and consistently. 

A major problem in Arundel for broadband has been the speed and reliability of the connection but with FTTP, the game has changed. 

In the end, it offers considerably faster and more consistent connectivity.

Faster Broadband

Broadband is classified into three categories: ADSL, FTTC, and FTTP. Two of the connections are made with standard copper wires. One offers a lot more modern form of connection that runs all the way up to your house.

ADSL

(sometimes known as ‘fast’ or ‘copper’ broadband) takes the same path as your phone connection. 

Copper connects the local exchange to the nearest street cabinet, and copper also connects the cabinet to your home.

As a result, your data is transmitted over copper wire all the way to and from the exchange. And there are a few drawbacks to this. 

First and foremost, data signals degrade quickly via copper wire, which means you lose a lot of speed in the physical world.

That’s why ADSL broadband’s typical download speed is roughly 10Mbps (that’s megabits per second; there are eight megabits in a megabyte if you’re wondering, so don’t get the two muddled up).

FTTC (fibre to the cabinet)

The exchange uses fibre optic cable to connect to your local street cabinet. That fibre optic cable is much more reliable and less vulnerable to signal loss than copper (which means it won’t slow down your connection speed nearly as much).

However, the final leg of a FTTC connection – from the cabinet to your home – still uses copper cables, putting the ‘last mile,’ as it’s known, vulnerable to the same issues as an ADSL connection.

Despite the fact that substantially less copper wire is utilised overall, you may expect much faster download rates of up to 66Mbps on average.

While this is sufficient for many houses, it still pales in contrast to a full fibre connection.

FTTP

FTTP (also known as “fibre to the premises,” “ultrafast,” or “full fibre broadband”) does exactly what it says on the tin. It entirely replaces copper wire with a fibre optic connection that extends all the way to your home.

With fibre replacing copper in the ‘last mile,’ you now have the fastest, most dependable technology throughout, resulting in significantly reduced signal loss and average download rates of up to 900Mbps!

Another perk of a full fibre connection is that it eliminates the need for a traditional phone line. That copper connection is completely unneeded, so if you don’t require a home phone, you won’t have to pay for a line.

This is all about modern networking. A full fibre connection delivers broadband signals all the way from the residence to the nearest exchange through a fibre optic cable.
